The Saskatchewan Environmental Society, along with concerned citizens and Citizens for Public Justice will appear in Court of Kings Bench tomorrow (Monday) at 10:00 a.m. for a preliminary hearing in their legal challenge of the Government of Saskatchewan’s decision to extend the life of coal-fired power plants beyond 2030.
The hearing will focus on whether the Court can review this decision through judicial review and whether the Environmental Society’s case against the provincial government can proceed.
The Environmental Society believes the provincial government’s decision to continue operating the coal-fired power stations beyond the 2030 federal deadline for their closure will have negative legal, environmental and socioeconomic effects.
They believe the Court has the responsibility to review whether the provincial government’s decision is lawful and reasonable, given that it would violate federal regulations put in place to slow the effects of climate change.
