Saskatchewan and Alberta are currently the only two provinces that have not signed the deal that provides federal funding to subsidize child-care expenses.
Families and child-care providers are relieved, but the provincial NDP accuses the Sask. Party government of waiting too long to sign the extension. The current five-year deal expires in March.
Premier Scott Moe broke the news during Question Period in the Legislature on Wednesday, saying “(We’re) providing certainty for those child-care operators, the certainty for families with young children.”
Education Minister Everett Hindley told reporters more details will be announced with federal Families Minister Patty Hajdu in Regina on Friday. The extension will last another five years with Hindley saying it has been a “priority” for the government.
