Around 2:30 this morning, a member of the Canine Unit was patrolling in the area of 20th Street West and Avenue F South when they saw a female discharge bear spray towards a male.
The officer activated the vehicle’s emergency equipment and the suspect fled. A Police Service Dog embarked on a foot chase where police say several times the suspect discharged bear spray at the PSD. An officer deployed a conducted energy weapon, and the PSD apprehended the suspect. As additional officers arrived to assist, police say the suspect kicked the PSD in the head.
She was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of a dog bite where police say she provided a false identity to staff. So, a 16-year-old female is now charged with assault with a weapon, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, injuring a law enforcement animal, fraudulent personation, and breaching court-imposed conditions.
The Saskatoon Police Service says the PSD did not suffer any life-threatening injuries but did significantly experience the effects of bear spray.
