There’s nothing quite like live vocals backed by a symphony orchestra.
That from Falynn Baptiste, one of the seven women who will be singing at TCU Place this Saturday evening as part of YXE Divas Christmas. YXE Divas is a panel of local female artists coming together to feature an array of genres, all of which will highlight and celebrate the female talent Saskatoon has to offer.
Baptiste says the first time she sang on stage was in First Grade.
“I’ve been singing my whole life, so I suppose I could be categorized as a professional musician,” she giggled. “I’ve won a few awards; the Saskatchewan Music Award and the Indigenous Music Award as a female artist. I’ve put out a few albums, and I guess I gained notoriety as a recording artist with my release of A Cree Christmas.”
She thought back to the first time she sang in front of an orchestra of 60 musicians.
“All of your senses are ignited, and it’s literally this wave that hits you. It’s so overwhelming. You want to linger in that moment and linger in that space, because I’m sure it transports you into a different realm of existence.”
Baptiste hopes the audience leaves with an appreciation for the dedication and commitment the artists have maintained throughout their lives.
“It’s meant to bring holiday cheer. It’s a space to gather, to dress up; go on a girl’s night, a guy’s night; bring some family, bring some friends!”
