The Saskatchewan RCMP says when looking at the last six years, 2025 had the most fatal vehicle collisions and fatalities.
From 2020 to 2025, RCMP say the number of fatal vehicle collisions increased by 34 per cent from 71 to 95. Meanwhile, the number of fatalities on Saskatchewan roads has increased by 25 per cent from 80 to 100.
When looking at December specifically, officers responded to five fatal vehicle collisions with five fatalities. This is down from 2024 figures, which saw 7 fatal collisions and 9 subsequent deaths. So far, in the first six days of January, Saskatchewan RCMP responded to one fatal vehicle collision with two fatalities on Saskatchewan roads.
Meanwhile in Alberta, preliminary data shows 20 fatal collisions occurred in December, which is above the 10-year average of 16.7. This trend has also continued into the new year, with four fatal collisions reported in the first four days of January. Weather is believed to be a factor in three of those incidents, though investigations remain ongoing.
