Prairie farmers are hoping the four day mission will eventually convince China to eliminate, or at least sharply reduce crippling tariffs on Canadian canola and yellow peas.
Carney will be arrive in China on Tuesday, January 13th and over a four-day period will meet business leaders and senior government officials, including President Xi Jinping.
A news release from the Prime Minister’s Office says there will be engagement on agriculture, trade and energy issues. It’s hope those discussion will set the groundwork for the ending the current tariffs on Canadian canola, yellow peas and pork. Those tariffs were introduced last year in retaliation for Canadian tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles and steel.
This will be the first time a Canadian Prime Minster has been to China since 2017. Afterward, Carney goes to Davos, Switzerland for the annual World Economic Forum.
