Officers with Saskatoon Crime Stoppers had to sift through 26,035 anonymous tips in 2025, 38 of which led to arrests and charges.
Crime Stoppers Coordinator Derek Chesney adds that the most prevalent type of crime that the organization deals with is retail thefts.
“People are hitting liquor stores a lot, and this goes hand in hand with our high amount of addictions in the community, as well as high amounts of homeless people. People are resorting to crime to feed their addictions or to pay for stuff.”
Over $9600 in rewards was allocated to tipsters last year, however not everyone came to pick up their cash.
“In that $9675 are a lot of unclaimed tips. A lot of people will submit their tip, and they never get back to us.”
A similar story at Regina Crime Stoppers; 28 rewards were approved, totaling $18,110. However, only 11 of those rewards were paid out, leaving over $6,000 of the reward money unclaimed.
Chesney said, “I’ve noticed that a lot of people, when they do send in a tip, the question is asked, ‘Do you want to receive a reward?’, and many people say no. That just shows me that there are still a lot of people out there that want Saskatoon to be safe and want us to live in a good community, and they don’t want to be recognized for the work that they’re doing.”
He adds that the Saskatoon Crime Stoppers Facebook page is back up and running after a brief hiatus, and Chesney encourages residents to check it out in case they see a familiar face.
