Battlefords RCMP need help identifying a potential suspect in multiple recent reports of the ‘grandparent’ scam.
On January 9, officers received multiple reports of ’emergency’ or ‘grandparent’ scams in the Battlefords detachment area. The learned that the caller is contacting victims and telling them there is an emergent situation involving their loved one, most often a grandchild.
The suspect tells the victim that money is required to get their grandchild out of jail or prevent them from going there. The caller then makes arrangements with the victim to meet in person to collect the cash.
RCMP say in some reports, the fraudulent caller also knows the real name of victim’s loved one, making the scam more believable.
There is photo of a man believed involved in this scam with this story online. If this is you, or if you recognize the man in the photo, please contact Battlefords RCMP.
