The Opposition NDP is drawing attention to Saskatchewan’s track record when it comes to rental increases.
The NDP says according to Rentals.ca, rent in Saskatchewan increased roughly 9.3 per cent in the last year and 16 per cent over the last three years.
Meanwhile, the release says, “rent decreased almost everywhere else in Canada.”
As a solution, the NDP even introduced the Rent Control Act during the Fall Sitting. This would cap rent increases at the same rate as inflation if passed.
However, Finance Minister Jim Reiter has always maintained his position that rent control “simply doesn’t work, dries up investment, and slows housing starts. “
