A message on social media from the Humboldt Broncos, after three junior hockey players in Alberta were killed in an accident Monday morning, says, “There are no words – only heavy hearts. The Humboldt Broncos extend our deepest condolences to the Southern Alberta Mustangs organization and to all those impacted by today’s tragedy. We stand with you. We mourn with you. We are with you.”
The post was for the Southern Alberta Mustangs hockey team following the deaths of 18 yr old JJ Wright, a left winger from Kamloops, 17-year-old Cameron Casorso who was a goalie, also from Kamloops, and 18 yr old Caden Fine from Birmingham, Alabama who played centre. The team posted that they were travelling together to hockey practice
Claresholm RCMP say at 11 a.m., officers responded to a report of a collision between a semi-truck pulling gravel and a small passenger vehicle. The collision occurred at the intersection of Highway 2 and 55 Avenue, at the north entrance to the community of Stavely. RCMP have determined the semi was northbound on Highway 2, and the passenger vehicle was driving eastbound at that intersection.
All three occupants of the passenger vehicle, two 18-year-old male residents of Kamloops, B.C., and a 17-year-old from Alabama, U.S.A, were declared deceased at the scene. The driver of the semi, a 40-year-old man from Stavely, received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Stavely is approximately 120 kilometres south of Calgary.
