With only four games left in the regular season entering Friday evening, the Saskatchewan Huskies goal of finishing first in the East Division would be determined, or at least provide a bit of a clearer picture to achieve that goal. Saskatchewan entered tonight two points back of the idle Mount Royal Cougars, while tonight’s opponent, the Calgary Dinos were only a point back of the Dogs making the final two weekends full of excitement in the race to the postseason. Saskatchewan left the ice tonight with one of their best performances of the season with a 4-1 win over the Dinos, their first over Calgary in their third meeting. Connor Roulette opening the scoring with a short-side snipe on a partial breakaway with Raphael Pelletier doubling the lead just over three-minutes later. Late in the second period, Brendan Lee scored his eighth of the season on a power-play pulling Calgary right back in going to the third period. Outshooting Calgary 16-5 in the third and 31-16 overall, Saskatchewan came out flying with Dawson Holt providing the insurance marker and Cole Jordan icing it with an empty-netter. Nolan Maier turned aside 15-of-16 shots for his fifth win in his sixth appearance with Saskatchewan, while Carl Stankowski did his job for Calgary, turning away 26-of-29 in the loss.
A massive two-points by Saskatchewan pulls them into a tie with Mount Royal in first place in the East Division, with the chance to take the lead tomorrow night with the rematch against Calgary. If successful, it will truly be a battle for first place next weekend when Saskatchewan visits Mount Royal for the final two games of the regular season.
