The Saskatchewan NDP is demanding that Scott Moe and Community Safety Minister Michael Weger act immediately to address crime increases in Saskatoon.
In a news release, Nicole Sarauer, Shadow Minister for Justice & Public Safety said, “We need to fight crime and take real action to address the root causes of crime.”
According to the January statistics from Saskatoon Police Service, Criminal Harassment is up 216 per cent. Theft of a motor vehicle and theft under $5,000 are both up 34 per cent, Theft over $5,000 and total violent crime have both increased by 13 per cent and total property crime has risen 16 per cent. These are year over year numbers. Break and enter residential is up almost 8 per cent but break and enter residential in a detached building is up 325 per cent.
The NDP says across Saskatchewan, the severe crime rate is double the national average.
