Saskatoon Public Schools has selected a name for the new school going up at 210 Avenue H South.
Marnie Ross, Superintendent of Education with Saskatoon Public Schools, says the new school will house students from pre-K to Grade 8 living in the King George, Pleasant Hill, and Riversdale areas. For this season, the name misiwe kisik- One Sky was chosen, symbolizing the coming-together of three communities under one sky.
Currently, these children attend King George School, which is over 110 years old. Once the new facility is complete, expected in fall of 2027, they will be transferred to misiwe kisik- One Sky.
She explains that great care was taken in the naming of the school, as the multi-year process included engagement with hundreds of community members, parents, and most importantly, students.
“We went to the school, and the teachers did really great work in the classrooms to generate names with them, and then that process was extended with the community with parents, with staff, and with partners.”
She explains that the ‘one sky’ theme was the most common among those who took part in the public engagement.
“It really reflects and honours those communities and the values of the communities and the schools.”
Ross adds that wood from a decommissioned Saskatchewan grain elevator is being repurposed for the walls of the school, providing both a connection to nature and the agricultural heritage of the province.
One Sky is expected to have the capacity to hold about 400 students.
