Premier Scott Moe hopes to ‘breathe new life’ into the relationship between Saskatchewan and India on his current trade mission through the Asian country.
The Premier spoke to reporters in Mumbai Friday morning, assuring listeners back home that he will be engaging on potash, uranium, and most important to Saskatchewan’s producers, pulse crops. India currently has a 30 per cent tariff on yellow peas and a 10 per cent tariff on lentils, which could climb to 30 per cent as soon as April 1 according to analysts.
“Aspirationally, I’d love to see the pulse tariffs removed and removed before we leave at the end of the week.”
Moe and Prime Minister Mark Carney will also discuss future collaborations in the energy sector, specifically around nuclear, rare-earth elements, and providing more Saskatchewan oil to the west coast and ultimately the Asian markets.
Moe is accompanying the Prime Minister to the region and returning home at the end of the week while Mark Carney continues on to Australia and Japan.
