The provincial government has renewed it’s partnership with STR8 UP to ensure the organization can continue its work in delivering supports that help individuals leave behind the gang life and reintegrate back into their communities.
STR8 UP is receiving $1.125 million from the provincial government, along with the option of extending the agreement for one or more additional years.
Community Safety Minister Michael Weger says that the investment symbolizes the province’s confidence in those leaving gang life behind.
“For the individuals in the program, I want you to know that this is really an investment in you. In your future, your safety, your potential, your families, and in your dreams.”
STR8 UP Chair Dawn Robbins says she is thankful for the funding, as without the services it helps to provide, individuals could fall back into their old habits.
“When you’re going through your journey and funding stops and you’re only halfway through a cycle, whether you’re dealing with addictions or family, and that stops, you kind of get lost and you don’t have those supports.”
“The continuing of programming has been paramount to the structure and the success of the program and its participants.”
The investment will allow STR8 UP to continue their services in custody outreach, community supports, reintegration planning, tattoo removal, and assistance with housing, life skills, and creating healthy relationships.
