It didn’t come easy, but the Saskatoon Blades got the redemption they were seeking Saturday when they doubled the Broncos 4-2 in Swift Current.
Freshman centre Ben Bowtell scored off a goal-mouth scramble with 6:44 remaining in the third period to break a 2-2 tie that had been in effect since the late stages of the first period. Captain Tyler Parr added an empty net goal as the Bridge City Bunch avenged Friday’s 4-3 overtime setback at home to Swifty. The Blue and Gold dominated the territorial play, out-shooting Speedy Creek 38-13, but were denied repeatedly by Archer Cooke in the Swift Current goal while Swifty was opportunistic on offence in the first period. At the other end, Taye Timmerman stopped 11 shots in his W-H-L debut for Saskatoon. The first shot eluded the 19-year-old goalie when Carter Moen’s drive was partially blocked and floated over the Winnipeg product and in just 38 seconds into the game. The other Broncos’ goal came from captain Hudson Darby on a late first period breakaway that knotted the score – and stayed that way for just under 36 minutes of game time. Jordan Martin and Cooper Williams also tallied for the Bridge City Bunch – now 33-25-7 for the season, five points back of Brandon for second place in the East Division and fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The Wheat Kings lost 3-1 Saturday in Edmonton and visit the Blue and Gold Wednesday at SaskTel Centre.
