Eight years ago today, Humboldt Broncos defenceman Logan Boulet succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the tragic bus accident near Tisdale.
However, because Boulet was a registered organ donor, his death saved six lives that day and so spurred the start of Green Shirt Day.
Donor Coordinator Lindy Brown with the Saskatchewan Health Authority says the day intends to celebrate past and current organ donors while also encouraging those who aren’t to consider it.
“In Saskatchewan, there’s around 100 people who are currently waiting for kidney transplants.” Around Canada, that number is 4400, and 250 will die each year before they receive what they need.
She urges people to have the organ donation conversation with their families so everyone knows your wishes if you were to pass away.
“Talking about death and end-of-life can feel really scary and uncertain, but life is surprising. The unexpected happens all the time, so really any time is the best time to have that conversation just so your family really knows what your wishes are and you know what their wishes are, as well.”
