Canada’s Minister of Canadian Identy and Culture highlighted today (Sat) some of the key sport investments in the Spring Economic Update while meeting with families, youth and athletes.
Marc Miller says the federal government is investing $755 million over five years and $118 million ongoing, to Canadian Heritage to broaden access to sport, to enhance the use of existing facilities and to add new infrastructure, and to support Canada’s world-class athletes.
From that total, $50 million over five years will go to competing for, and hosting more world-class sporting event in Canada.
A news release from the federal government says funding will be tied to legacy-building projects that deliver lasting benefits beyond the events themselves.
Facilities that are built or upgraded for major events will continue to serve communities after the event, strengthening local sport system.
