On a wet weekend in Saskatoon, the Berries managed to overcome Mother Nature twice and get the better of a pair of W-C-B-L opponents.
Saskatoon extended their winning streak to seven games, bouncing the Weyburn Beavers 10-4 Saturday evening and trouncing the Moose Jaw Miller-Express 10-2 Sunday afternoon – both game at Cairns Field. Both contests were played under the threat of rain. But, the precipitation on Saturday held off until a few hours after the Berries rallied twice to subdue the Beavers. The rain then stopped a few hours before Sunday’s opening pitch when Saskatoon broke open a close, pitcher’s duel with six runs in the sixth inning to derail the Miller-Express.
On Saturday, only three Berries’ players accounted for all 10 hits against Weyburn. Second baseman Gael Salinas and centre-fielder Nathan Houston both went four-for-five at the plate with Houston driving in three runs and Salinas had two R-B-I while also scoring three times. First baseman Josh Henson had the other two hits, including a two-run home run in the seventh frame that gave Saskatoon a 7-4 lead that the Beavers couldn’t recover from.
On Sunday, Saskatoon starting pitcher Michael Sall and Moose Jaw starter Sean Bavis gave their opposition hitters fits for five innings. But, Bavis gave up six straight hits to open the sixth inning and the Berries turned a 2-1 lead into an 8-1 advantage as they improved their record to 17-6…good for a two-and-a-half game lead over the Miller-Express in the W-C-B-L’s East Division. Saskatoon has Monday off, then will play their first games of the season against West Division opposition when they host the Brooks Bombers on Tuesday and Wednesday at Cairns Field. Following are Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews from Sunday with head coach Joe Carnahan, plus first baseman Gavin Panks and left fielder Nick Stinson – as well as Saturday’s conversations with Carnahan, Salinas and Houston. In addition, there’s a picture of the Sunday post-game celebration…..
