There was no Canada Day celebration for the Saskatoon Berries at Cairns Field on Wednesday.
The Berries eight-game winning streak came to an end in front of 2,251 fans as the East Division leaders fell 7-5 to the West Division basement-dwelling Brooks Bombers. Saskatoon started and finished strong, but didn’t do a lot with their opportunities in between. The Berries opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning and tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth with two runs, but fell short. After forcing extra innings Tuesday with a two-run hit in the bottom of the ninth inning, Gavin Panks came off the bench Wednesday to try and do the same thing – only to strike out. Brooks ended a three-game losing skid and improved their record to 5-18 by scoring single runs in the second, third and seventh innings – plus a massive four-run outburst in the fourth. That made Saskatoon product and Berries’ starter Jackson Fox the losing pitcher. Saskatoon now hits the road with their 18-7 record for five games in four days, beginning Thursday in Regina. That stretch includes a Friday doubleheader in Moose Jaw. The next Berries’ home game is Monday against the defending champion Red Sox.
