The city of Saskatoon is looking to support a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Saskatoon with the release of a new 25-year road-map for the Climate Action Strategy.

The strategy is broken up into three parts, two playbooks and a guide for the transition. Playbook one has measures to reduce carbon pollution, while playbook two has suggestions on how to prepare communities for climate changes guiding decision making as the City prepares for challenges such as extreme heat, flooding, wildfire smoke and severe storms that can affect public safety, infrastructure and essential services.

Director of Sustainability Jeanna South explained that individual initiatives from the report will be considered separately from the strategy.

“City councils approval of the strategy doesn’t come with a price tag attached. The individual projects from the strategy are not automatically approved, with the exception of this report, nor are they funded to go ahead. ”

Actions identified in the Strategy include: measuring indoor air quality in civic buildings to help ensure safe public spaces during wildfire smoke events; considering climate risk in City planning and infrastructure projects; and supporting homeowners in improving the climate resilience of their properties.

South added that the strategy has been in preparation since 2024. Since then, the strategy has received input from more than 1,000 community residents, experts, businesses, and organizations.
