No charges will be laid as a result of an investigation into an officer-involved shooting.
On July 13, 2025, Regina police were called out to investigate a homicide after the discovery of the body of a man in Regina’s North Central neighbourhood.
A suspect was later identified by police, who learned that he was also in possession of a black Glock handgun. He was arrested on July 16, however black Glock handgun he was reported to carry was not found. He was then released from police custody, however it was later determined that he was, in fact, involved in the homicide, so the decision was made that he would be re-arrested and charged with murder.
On July 18th, he was observed leaving the backyard of a home on the 1300 block of Athol Street and heading towards the back alley on his bike.
He was quickly ordered by the Subject-officer, who was in plain clothes at the time, to get on the ground. The man dropped his bike, and it was evident that he had a knife. Instead of getting on the ground, the man put his backpack on the ground and began digging around in his front pocket.
His hand then abruptly emerged from his pocket holding a black object which the officer believed was the Glock. The officer fire his service pistol once, hitting the man in the shoulder. Upon closer inspection, the object was actually a black cell phone. The man was placed in handcuffs, and two minutes later, pronounced dead by EMS. Although it was not directly involved in the incident, a search of the affected person’s backpack yielded a bag that contained a black replica Glock handgun.
Due to the circumstances and the knowledge that the man may have been in possession of a firearm, SIRT has ruled that the officers actions were warranted.
