The City of Saskatoon is exploring the implementation of Adaptive Signal Control Technology to enhance the flow of traffic in the College Drive corridor.  

The technology adjusts traffic signal timing in real time based on current traffic conditions. The benefits include reduced travel times, decreased vehicle emissions, and reliable travel conditions, however the price is a bit of a downside.

Jay Magus, Saskatoon’s Transportation Director, says “A very high-level preliminary cost estimate for Saskatoon is we’re looking at around $50,000 capital per intersection. It would require some operating funding for maintenance and software updates. When we did our jurisdictional scan, it was looking at around $2500 per intersection annually.” 

The three options presented by administration include not implementing anything, piloting the technology on Millar Ave and Circle Drive North, and implementing it on College Drive and/or 1st Ave.  

Committee voted to receive the information without taking any further steps at this time.
