When they finally found the scoring touch Friday night, it was like the Saskatoon Blades turned on a goal tap that the Swift Current Broncos couldn’t turn off.

Sophomore forward Ben Bowtell (pictured in blue, photo by Ed Fonger) scored twice as the Bridge City Bunch tallied five times in the second period on the way to a 7-2 triumph. Bowtell added an assist for a three-point game, giving the Blue and Gold hope that the 18-year-old Yorkton product will have a big improvement on his six goals amongst 12 points in 64 games in his rookie campaign. The game actually started with a bang as 18-year-old Blades’ centre Triston Mitchell-McElhone squared off with 20-year-old Jacob Beaulieu – a veteran of the Quebec Maritimes Junior League – in a fight just 22 seconds into the contest. Swift Current followed that energy into a goal by Luke Huska just 80 seconds later. However, Konstantin Hutzinger tied the score with 24 seconds remaining in the first period and Saskatoon carried the momentum into the big middle frame output. Cooper Williams, Kain Martiniuk, Cohen Lewko and Charles Johnson also tallied for the Bridge City Bunch, who out-shot the Broncos 46-39. Williams added two assists to join Bowtell in the three-point night club. Other multi-point getters were Hutzinger and Martiniuk – each with a helper to go along with their goals – while defenceman Jack Kachkowski, who wore the “C” Friday, chipped in with a pair of assists. Despite giving up the early Swift Current goal, on just the second shot he faced, Czech newcomer Martin Psohlavec shone in the Blue and Gold net with 37 saves. The Blades are back in pre-season action Saturday when they take on the arch-rival Prince Albert Raiders in the annual pre-season game at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.
