A single female mosquito can lay up to five thousand eggs, so it does not take long for the population to rise.
City of Saskatoon entomologist Sydney Worthy says those eggs can become adults in two weeks. She describes current conditions as ideal for mosquito development—warm, wet and humid.
Crews have been busy applying larvacide to ditches, sloughs and other standing water sources. The larvacide eats the gut lining of the mosquito larva, but does not harm other organisms.
There are ten common mosquito species in Saskatchewan, but Worthy says up to 30 can be found. So far, the species that carries the West Nile Virus is not one of them. If they appear, it is usually later in the summer.
This is the interview with Sydney Worthy.
