With a hot weekend in the forecast the City of Saskatoon has activated is Extreme Heat Emergency Response with cooling stations, misting tents and water being provided to those who are most vulnerable. The City has other suggestions for everyone to consider:
If you are planning to take in some outdoor festivities, have water with you and drink it throughout the day, before you feel thirsty. Limit physical activity during the hottest part of the day and find some shade to take a break. Although it may be tempting to take a dip in the river, Saskatoon’s Emergency Management Organization advises that swimming in the river is prohibited because of the changing currents and unstable bottom.
Think of your pets during hot weather. Make sure they have fresh water and monitor for signs of heat stress such as rapid panting. Never leave pets in parked cars for any amount of time, and offer your pet a means to cool down, such as a wading pool or damp towel.
Saskatoon Transit has the Safe Bus Program, which means anyone who needs immediate shelter or needs to contact emergency services can flag down a bus or go to a parked bus. The driver can contact emergency services and will give you a safe place to wait.
There is more water usage during heat waves, so the City is encouraging residents to be water wise by watering your lawn and trees early in the morning and skip windy days to minimize evaporation.
