The Water Security Agency has a cost-sharing rebate for communities for flood damage prevention and reduction measures.
Minister Responsible for the WSA, Jeremy Cockrill, realizes this has been a dry year overall, but the hope is that communities take advantage of this funding for long-term mitigation strategies to become better prepared for flooding in the future.
The Flood Damage Reduction Program is accepting applications through October 1st and the project work would need to be done by the end of March next year.
Eligible projects will be cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the WSA and the municipality up to $100,000 per project.
WSA spokesperson, Sean Osmar says he has heard that for every dollar invested in flood mitigation, you get about $20 back.
Some ideas for projects include hydrologic investigations to develop risk assessments, flood mapping, and construction of permanent dykes, berms or culverts.
