Two rivals went head to head once again this evening at Merlis Belsher Place as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies were looking to sweep their weekend series against the University of Alberta Pandas, but a solid performance from both teams saw the Pandas score a late game tying goal to eventually win the game in overtime.
**********
The first period was scoreless thanks to stellar goaltending at both ends, Camryn Drever for the Huskies coming off a shutout last night and Misty Rey for the Pandas. Saskatchewan would get an early power play and even though they couldn’t capitalize, they had some great looks and continued to apply the pressure for the first half of the period. Shortly after the halfway mark, Alberta would get their turn on the power play getting some great looks as well and started to apply the pressure and generate chances until the end of the frame.
Fast forward into the second period where both teams traded chances back-and-forth, at the 8-minute mark Kelsey Hall would break the scoreless tie with a perfect shot at a near impossible angle along the goal line while driving to the net. The Dogs would continue their strong second period well into the third, until the halfway mark.
With almost five minutes left in the third period, miscommunication behind the net would leave Allison Reich all alone in front of the net to pot home a perfect feed from Raegan Yewdall behind the cage to tie the game and forcing overtime.
The Pandas would dominate overtime, only allowing a single shot on goal for the Huskies, an easy save for goaltender Misty Rey. The Pandas would come back 2-on-1 led by Natalie Kieser sliding one across to Izzy Lajoie to find the back of the net and giving Alberta a 2-1 victory and a split in the weekend series.
