Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe shared via X, formerly Twitter, that SaskPower provided 153 Megawatts of electricity to Alberta yesterday evening to help them with a shortage of power in the neighbouring province. He also made a point of noting the power will be coming from natural gas and coal-fired plants. The same plants he says they won’t shut down despite the plans by the federal government to do so.
Alberta Emergency Management Agency issued a notice indicating extreme cold resulted in high power demand and had placed the Alberta power grid at risk of rotating power outages. Albertans were asked to limit their electrical usage to essential needs only and to turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances. As well Alberta residents were advised to cook with microwaves instead of stoves.
There’s no word from SaskPower what Saskatchewan’s power usage has been as the extreme cold continues to grip the province for a fourth day.
