The Great Backyard Bird Count is on Friday through Family Day Monday. The count is happening globally, organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society. If you don’t want to brave the cold, you can do it from your window.
The count was launched in 1998 and then in 2009 Birds Canada joined the project and then it became a global project in 2013.
The bird count website says all you have to do is watch birds for 15 minutes or more at least once between February 14th and 17th. Identify the birds you see or hear and then submit your data to help scientists better understand and protect birds around the world.
If you need help identifying your birds, you can use the Merlin Bird ID app. Those who are more experienced can use eBird or if you prefer to enter your sightings on a computer, you can do so by creating a free Cornell Lab account.
