Saskatchewan RCMP say the boy charged in connection to the quadruple homicide on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation is 15 years old. RCMP revealed this morning that the teen, who was arrested on the First Nation on Tuesday, faces four counts of First Degree Murder. He appeared in court by video today (Thursday) and cannot be identified as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
At a news conference yesterday RCMP announced that 18-year-old Darrius Racette had been charged with four counts of First-Degree Murder also in relation to the quadruple homicide. He too was arrested on Tuesday, but in Yorkton, not the First Nation. He was back in Yorkton Provincial Court on Thursday.
Superintendent Joshua Graham, officer in charge of the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Branch, says although they have arrested two people, the investigation continues. However, at this time they believe these two are the only suspects. But, Graham says, investigators always keep an open mind that they may come across information that implicates others, either being responsible in the homicides or a party to the offence of the homicides.
The four victims are 34-year-old Tracy Hotomani and 51-year-old Terry Jack, both from Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation, 44-year-old Sheldon Quewezance from Zagime Anishinabek, and 47-year-old Shauna Fay from Indian Head.
Graham says homicide investigations are very lengthy, even after suspects have been charged, and the amount of work is exponential based on the number of victims. The work continues with forensic evidence to go through, interviews, analysis of seized items like cell phones and searches in the community.
