A recent Leger survey indicates the majority of Canadians, at 81 per cent, are concerned the U.S. President Donald Trump may use measures such as tariffs and trade sanctions to push Canada into a more formal economic relationship, and 70 per cent support the federal government matching any tariffs imposed by the U.S. on a dollar-for-dollar basis.
In the States, from those polled, only a third of Americans at 33 per cent are in favour of tariffs being imposed on Canadian products and 49 per cent believe the tariffs will negatively impact the U.S. economy.
Canadians have mixed views on the U.S. Twenty-seven per cent of respondents perceive the U.S. as an enemy country, 30 per cent consider the U.S. an ally and 27 per cent are neutral, while the majority of Americans, at 56 per cent, consider Canada an ally.
