Firearms safety and education training will now be more easily accessible to Metis citizens across the province.
Yesterday, the Saskatchewan Firearms Office signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Metis Nation- Saskatchewan, with a shared goal of increasing firearms licenses among the Metis population.
Tim McLeod says the goal of the agreement is to encourage responsible firearms ownership while also supporting traditions and Indigenous heritage.
MN-S President Glen McCallum says demand for this type of training is high, especially within younger generations.
“I’m glad to sign this MOU to be able to talk about gun safety, to be able to bring our people from north, central and south, to be able to sit in the same room and be trained in the area of safety.”
The MOU will also work to minimize unnecessary criminalization for regulatory offences, compensate individuals adequately for seized firearms, and protect gun owners’ privileges.
A second phase of the training initiative could include training a Master Instructor, which would then travel across the province training other Metis citizens.
