Saskatchewan’s Official Opposition suggests the Sask Party government should have had a plan months ago to protect the province from U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war. NDP Leader Carla Beck says nearly every other province has a plan for what she calls a “slow moving train” of economic hardship. Tomorrow (Wed), unless there is a last minute announcement from the President, Canada could have more tariffs, targeting key industries for Saskatchewan like agriculture, energy and mining.
Beck says the Sask Party hasn’t announced any concrete plans to mitigate the fallout for workers, businesses, and farmers already struggling under existing trade restrictions. She adds that she also hasn’t seen a clear strategy for improving east-west trade infrastructure, such as rail lines, pipelines and power transmission.
