More people will have the chance to belong to the Cosmo Industries day programs with the expansion of its Market Mall facility and the opening of a new program on Acadia Drive. The Market Mall location has doubled its size and moved to beside Fabricland. It will be able to support an additional 10 people and the Acadia satellite facility will support another 20.
Mayor Charlie Clark said at the grand opening that Cosmo showed resilience after the flood at its main building on 34th Street a few years ago, and now they are expanding. He commented that with the satellite program in Market Mall, the participants are able to be out in the community with their goals of finding jobs.
Cosmo Acadia is a new life enrichment program with a focus on partnering with the community for recreation, culture, quality of life and volunteer opportunities.
Cosmopolitan Industries is for people with intellectual disabilities. It began with 15 people in 1970 and grown to now supporting over 400.
The province provides more than $8-million annually to Cosmo. Funding of $20-thousand was provided for the expansion of the day program in Market Mall and $120-thousand to help with startup costs for the new day program on Acadia Drive.
