The Saskatoon Fire Department received a 911 call from an employee at the McDonalds on 51st Street at 12:13 Monday morning. A commercial kitchen appliance was on fire. Everyone in the building was evacuating as fire crews arrived on scene about 4 minutes later. The employees had tried to put the fire out but weren’t successful.
Firefighters used a dry chemical fire extinguisher and the building’s sprinkler system to put out the fire. The situation was under control within a half hour and fire crews made sure that there was no extension of the fire into the building’s roof.
The cause of the fire is an accidental grease fire originating from inside of a commercial deep fryer. The Fire Investigator estimates damage at $10,000.
