A CJWW caller said recently that the Prairie Spirit School Division would not longer be giving bus service to students attending schools in Saskatoon as of next fall.
The school division explained in an email to the newsroom that there are students in what as known as the GEMSĀ area on the edge of Prairie Spirit school division, very close to Saskatoon, and the division had been busing them into the city, although they are not fully funded to do so because these students are being bused outside of the Prairie Spirit boundaries.
That’s why the decision was made last spring to stop the service, beginning with new students this past fall and then expanding to all students in the GEMS area as of June 30th of this year.
The GEMS area is named after four old country schools that had been in that area – Gideon, Ebzel, Merrill and Smithville.
The Education Act states that boards are not obligated to provide transportation services to students attending schools in another school division.
