A 28 year old man has been sentenced to fifteen years in jail, charged with manslaughter in the death of his partner, 33 year old Jessica Cameron. Jamie Smallchild was originally charged with second degree murder.
On July 6th of 2019 around 6 in the morning, Rosthern RCMP responded to a complaint of a damaged vehicle in a wooded area near Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation. Officers found a 25 year old man, Jamie Smallchild, in the driver’s seat and Cameron in the passenger seat. She was pronounced dead on scene.
At the time, RCMP reported that officers observed inconsistencies between the injuries sustained by Smallchild and Cameron and the damage on the minivan. Smallchild was arrested the next day. After credit for time served in his manslaughter sentence, Smallchild has 13 years left in jail.
