Meewasin Valley Authority held an event today (friday) in Saskatoon at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan to mark the completion of the River Heights/Meewasin Park and southwest section sof the Meewasin Trail. A news release from MVA indicates that the Meewasin Trail has seen nearly double the usage in some areas since the pandemic. The enhancements make the trail safer and more accessible while acommodating user volumes and enhancing natural features as much as possible.
Meewasin announced today (fri) that numerous trail-enhancing projects have been completed and others are underway. The MVA received a funding from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF). This event marks the completion of the River Heights/Meewasin Park and Southwest sections of the Meewasin Trail, celebrates the commencement of construction of the primary Meewasin Trail at the Kinsmen Riverfront, and provides important updates on downtown Meewasin Trail upgrades coming soon.
Meewasin Trail has than 105 km of multi-use pathways through the Saskatoon region which run from Wanuskewin to Chief Whitecap Park, and includes a loop on both sides of the river, along with the trails at Beaver Creek.
The Meewasin Valley Authority is inviting everyone to enjoy Meewasin Trail Day tomorrow, as part of the larger annual celebration of International Trail Day. Meewasin spokesperson, Amy Wall, says there are activities throughout the day including a bison watch, a nature walk and outdoor yoga. You can check out the times and locations on Meewasin’s website, where you can click on the link to register, although the events are free. Wall says they want to have an idea how many people to expect.
She hopes people will also consider donating to support future trail enhancements. An anonymous donor is matching up to $30,000 through the end of June, so your donation will be doubled. Wall considers Trail Day an opportunity to bring extra appreciation to the Meewasin river valley trails, the trail development and the healthy lifestyle they inspire that makes Saskatoon so special.
