Just after 8:30 this morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a home reported to be fully involved in fire in the 1700 block of Avenue D North. Fire crews confirmed that when they arrived and reported heavy black smoke coming from the roof. In a news release the Saskatoon Fire Department says power lines were down and arcing from the fire, and the natural gas line at the rear of the home was also involved in the fire.
While waiting for SaskEnergy, firefighters focused on extinguished the blaze from the exterior while monitoring the natural gas line. SaskEnergy arrived at 9:48 and as of 10:15 when the news release was sent out, the natural gas leak had not yet been contained. The fire was brought under control, but at this time, the natural gas line and its leak are still being worked on.
Two people inside were able to evacuate, with one elderly man being treated for smoke inhalation and transported to hospital by ambulance. Residents are asked to avoid the area to allow firefighterss to work safely. A cause for the fire and its origin have not yet been determined.
