An exhilarating first season in the Western Canadian Baseball League came to an end Tuesday night for the Saskatoon Berries.
A three-run home run by left fielder Joe Osborn in the second inning put the Moose Jaw Miller-Express ahead for good as they defeated the Berries 5-3 in the third and deciding game of the East Division final in front of 1,811 fans at Cairns Field. Saskatoon battled back to within one run on two different occasions, but couldn’t break through the pitching of Moose Jaw’s Westin Walls, who struck 11 batters in a complete game outing. The result pushes the Miller-Express into the W-C-B-L final against the two-time defending champion Okotoks Dawgs, starting Thursday. For the Berries, their first season produced a 31-25 record, good for third place in the East Division and a first round playoff victory over Medicine Hat before falling to Moose Jaw. Saskatoon drew more than 55,000 fans to Cairns Field over 29 dates for a better than 1,800 average per game in a 2,217 spectator capacity facility. Following is the official linescore and game information from the W-C-B-L website plus post-game interviews with Berries’ head coach Joe Carnhan and team president Steve Hildebrand…..
