The latest Point-in-Time Count has identified 1,499 people in Saskatoon experiencing homelessness. The City in partnership with the Saskatoon Housing Initiatives Partnership, the Reaching Home Community Entity in Saskatoon, and the Community-University Institute for Social Research at USask, along with numerous community organizations and over 200 volunteers conducted the Point-in-Time Homelessness Count on October 8th.
The City’s Director of Planning and Development, Lesley Anderson, says, “The results of this count represent the minimum number of individuals experiencing unsheltered and sheltered homelessness in Saskatoon.” The totals nearly three times the 550 in the last count in 2022.
A news release from the City says while some of the increase reflects the recognition of new categories, other factors have contributed to the significant rise The count offers a “snapshot” of individuals and families in emergency shelters, transitional housing, unsheltered locations including encampments, and experiencing hidden homelessness. Further data from this homelessness count will be released early in 2025.
