Camponi Housing Corporation has been selected by the City of Saskatoon to develop a new, 120-unit affordable housing project, under the Housing Accelerator Fund initiative. It will be at the corner of Heritage Crescent and McKercher Drive, near the Cliff Wright Saskatoon Public Library and Lakewood Civic Centre. The HAF supports local governments in building more homes, faster with the goal of increasing affordable housing supply.
Camponi is a non-profit which provides safe, affordable, quality housing for Métis and Indigenous people in Saskatoon. Chair of the RJ Camponi Trust, Angela Bishop, says the housing will focus on large family-friendly spaces, but there will also be smaller units and the project includes wrap-around supports to help residents. The plan is also for a rooftop garden, daycare spaces, shared green areas and solar panels. Bishop adds, “We know there is such a need for affordable housing in Saskatoon, and particularly within the Indigenous community, so it’s really exciting news. It’s an exciting opportunity.” The development aligns with the City’s official community plan, by enhancing affordable housing options on the east side.
Bishop says as of October, there were 804 households on their waiting list for affordable housing and that’s a 36 per cent increase from last June. Right now, Camponi Housing has about 400 homes in Saskatoon and is in the middle of building 164 homes in a townhouse community in Blairmore on Hart Road.
The McKercher Drive project is conditional on securing financing and achieving milestones set for development on the site. It is anticipated it will open in 2027.
