After searching for a forever home for over 40 years, the City of Saskatoon Archives have settled down in the Civic Square East Building, also known as the old post office.
To celebrate its grand opening tomorrow, as well as Archives Week, City Archivist Jeff O’Brien will be giving guided tours of the archives, including the record storage area, where visitors aren’t typically allowed to be.
“One of our biggest private collections is our Star Pheonix collection which we just received before Christmas. There’s about 450,000 photographs… bound copies of the newspapers, clippings files, subjects’ files, biographies, that kind if material.”
To follow that will be several free speaker presentations in the Bassment, as well as a visit from musical guest Terry Hoknes.
“The mayor is going to be there. She will do a formal dedication of the archives,” he adds.
O’Brien adds that the new building provides some much-needed extra space, as the archives were previously located in a north-end strip mall.
“Archives, we gather new material, and it eats up our available space. Well, in our old space, we were completely out of room, so this new space is finally adequate to our space needs.”
The evening of events begins at 6:00 p.m., and it’s free to attend.
