Starting May 12th, Broadway Bridge will be under a major rehabilitation project. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will need to find alternate routes if they normally use the bridge.
Broadway Bridge is expected to be under major construction for about six months. The bridge, pedestrian walkway, Broadway Avenue, Saskatchewan Crescent, 19th Street and 3rd and 4th Avenue traffic will be affected.
The bridge will have new asphalt, waterproofing, and traffic barriers. Arch and railing improvements and the removal of old and abandoned utilities underneath the bridge are also a part of the project. At the same time as the bridge work, 19th Street will see water main replacements. The Intersection belonging to 4th Avenue South and 19th Street East will be redesigned for safety and for busing efficiency between Broadway Avenue and 19th Street, which is a future Link route.
Saskatoon Transit will be affected with some Broadway Avenue, Victoria Avenue and Downtown routes redirected. For real-time bus information, visit Transit service alerts and third-party apps like Transit and Google Maps Transit.
General Manager of Transportation and Construction, Terry Schmidt explains the decision made to close down the entire bridge rather than parts of it at a time for public use.
“A contractor can operate much more efficiently, and productivity rates are much higher than while they’re trying to accommodate traffic on the road. If we do a full bridge closure, the work can be completed in one construction season. Allowing traffic to be on the bridge while construction…would extend it beyond one construction season.”
The approximate cost of the project is $15.5 million.
