A senior Saskatchewan RCMP officer is expressing frustration after two impaired drivers hit police vehicles in two different communities this week.
Superintendent Grant St. Germaine says impaired driving is dangerous and can lead to tragic results. Fortunately, no one was injured in either collision, but one of the RCMP vehicles is out of commission.
The first incident happened on Victoria Day in Tisdale. There was a report of a vehicle driving in an erratic manner. It was spotted in front of a business. The officer pulled over and turned on the emergency lights. That was when the vehicle backed into the RCMP cruiser.
The second incident happened two days later in Swift Current during a curfew check. While the officer was investigating, his vehicle was hit from behind by a man driving with no lights on.
In a related story, Saskatchewan RCMP have released statistics from its Canada Road Safety Enforcement Campaign held between May 13-19.
More than 6,600 vehicles were stopped during the initiative. A total of 41 drivers were charged with alcohol-related driving offenses and three more with drug-related driving offenses.
Fifty-nine roadside suspensions were issued related to the recent consumption of alcohol. There were 67 roadside suspensions related to recent consumption of drugs before driving.
