The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health says there is an increased risk of drug overdose in the Meadow Lake area—in particular the Island Lake First Nation and the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation.
RCMP testing of the seized crystal meth have found some samples contain fentanyl. There is an unknown quantity of fentanyl and people who use crystal meth may experience opioid toxicity.
The effects are not known and while naloxone can temporarily address some of the effects of opioids, it will not reverse effects of methamphetamine.
This alert will remain in effect for one week.
The warning was issued following the arrest of two people during a traffic stop in Meadow Lake on Monday. Twenty-nine grams of methamphetamine laced with fentanyl was recovered. Pepper spray and cash was also seized.
Thirty-six-year-old Dallas Kelly Weeseekase from the Island Lake First Nation and 22-year-old Charise Paddy from the Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation face drug charges. Paddy is also charged with one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose while Weeseekase is charged with three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.
