A man was shot by RCMP in the Canwood area on Wednesday following a pursuit to apprehend two people wanted for multiple outstanding warrants for firearms-related offenses.
It started around 12:30 on Wednesday afternoon, when officers attempted to stop a vehicle in Crutwell that matched the description of the suspects’ SUV. The driver sped away and was pursued by RCMP until the SUV hit a spike belt. It drove off the road and into a field about ten kilometres west of Canwood. The SUV drove into a washout and stopped.
As officers approached the SUV, a man with a firearm exited the vehicle. A confrontation occurred and the officer shot the man in the arm. The man was treated by RCMP until paramedics arrived. The 30-year-old woman passenger was arrested as well. No officers were injured.
The 32-year-old man had warrants from RCMP in Melfort and Ile-a-la-Crosse for multiple firearms and weapons offenses. The woman from the Peter Chapman Band was also arrested on outstanding warrant. Charges have not yet been laid in connection with Wednesday’s incident.
The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) will investigate the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting.
