Correctional Services of Canada says on Wednesday, an inmate from the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon died while in custody. The individual’s name cannot be made public to comply with a court-ordered publication ban to protect the identity of any young person who has been dealt with under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
At the time of death, the inmate had been serving a sentence of 8 years, 8 months, and 17 days for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm into or at a Place, and Discharge a Restricted or Prohibited Firearm with Intent. Their sentence began December 23, 2019.
As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances. Policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified.
